Codex gigas: bible devil

Codex gigas or giant book is a medieval manuscript with the largest size that still exist. This book was written at the beginning of the 13th century in order Benedict monastery in podlazice in Bohemia. Currently the book is stored at the Swedish Royal Library in Stockholm. It takes two librarians power to lift the book. This book is often called "the bible the devil" because of the large size of a pictorial illustration of the devil inside. 

Codex was placed in a place made of wood, covered with leather and decorated with metal.Height 92 cm, width 50 cm and a thickness of 22 cm. At first, it has 320 pieces codex manuscript.However, 8 sheets of it are removed. It is unknown who is throwing 8 sheets and for what purpose. There are allegations that dumped 8 sheets may contain rules of the order Benedict monastery. Weight codex is almost reached 75 kg. Sheets used for writing this codex is a skin that comes from 160 calves. 

The monastery where the codex was made ​​was demolished in the 15th century. Note that there is at suggests that making codex codex is about the year 1229 AD After writing, codex was later transferred to Sedlec Cistercian monastery and finally bought by Benedict Monastery in Byoevnov.From the years 1477-1593, this codex is stored in a library in Broumov until finally brought to Prague in 1594 to become part of the collection of Rudolf II. On September 24, 2007, the Codex gigas was brought back to Prague after 359 years.

The contents of the codex is "a sum of the Benedictine order's knowledge", "The War of the Jews" written by Josephus, a list of the saints, the method for determining the date of the celebration of Easter, the whole bible latin pre-Vulgate, Isidore of Seville's encyclopedia of Etymologiae , Cosmas of Prague's Chronicle of Bohemia, the various treaties (from the history, etymology and physiology), a calendar with nekrologium, list the name of the monks at the monastery Podlaice, magic formulas and other records.

Entire contents of this codex was written in Latin. The manuscript is also decorated with colors like red, blue, yellow, green and gold. All capital letters are a striking color. What is remarkable is the entire contents of this codex was written with great relevance between pages. Which means that this book was written by one person with a sustainable mind. This makes many experts believe that the whole codex was written in a very short time.

On page 290, there is a picture of Satan with a height of about 50 cm. A few pages before this image was written on a sheet of blackened skin and made with a dark character, which makes it different with the entire contents of codices. 

According to legend, codex writer was a monk who violate the rules of the monastery and punished with a bound on the wall in a standing position for life. The monk is begging forgiveness from the extraordinary punishment was cruel. In return he promised to create a book that will bring glory to the monastery and the knowledge of mankind forever, and he promised to finish it in just one night. Toward midnight, the monk became doubtful whether he can resolve it yourself. So he sold his soul to the devil for a rescue. Satan then finish the manuscript. As an homage to the devil who helped him, the monk added the devil picture into the codex. Despite the legends that involve the devil, in the days of the Inquisition, these codices are still kept by the monastery and studied by many scholars to this day.
